Just heard there was a fatal Grizz attack in Yellowstone Park. A guy and wife hiking on Wapiti Lake trail surprised a Sow and cubs and the guy got attacked. He didn't survive. That is all I heard, the real story will be more involved I suspect.

Be careful out there.

That's about the long & short of it. Tragic case of hiking in bear country.

It's all over the news up here in Red Lodge, MT.

I heard it's the first bear fatality in the Park since late 80's...but just heard that. Either way...sad news.

There was at least one fatality last year. I think Soda Butte campground was the place it occurred.....

Apparently the incident at Soda Butte was just outside the park, but that's close enough for me.

Last year the bear at Soda Butte Campground (MT)
was looking for a meal.

The other death was west of Cody (WY) in a posted area.
The bear had just awaken from being tagged and tested.

Yesterday's bear attack was a female protecting her cubs.

Sad stuff.

You are right.... Apparently the bears can't read the boundary lines either. I agree with Kyo... .That particular case the bear was after a meal. We all need to practice extra catuion in the back country. Last week there was an official grizzly sighting nine miles from Lander in an area not "supposed" to have grizz.....

Lander is not that far from the Primary Conservation Area. It could have slipped down from the Res, or crossed over from the Pinedale side easy enough.

The sow at soda butte was reportedly ill and malnourished. The folks in the park apparently ran when the bear started towards them. Sad situation all around.

I thought the initial report was that the bear was lighter than normal, but that it wasn't enough to justify the actions. Another report was that an area photographer was putting food out for bears.

Wow, I had not head of the baiting... Still very sad. The bear in Lander most likely migrated south from the Dubois area.

I should say they never were able to determine if the baiting actually happened.
