I just can't wait for this place to open.

Here is an old story - I'm looking for a more recent update:

Story

QUOTE
The retailer had hoped to open its first Colorado store in mid-2006, but negotiations regarding infrastructure improvements -- including road widenings and a new I-70 interchange -- with the city and county should delay the opening to August or September 2007. Cabela's has said it will spend roughly $15 million on road work associated with its Wheat Ridge store, but it won't foot the bill for fixes to long-term road and freeway problems.

The project now is undergoing an environmental assessment that could take 12 months.

I'm sorry to hear it's getting pushed back. It will no doubt be cool once it's open. But I imagine what I save in shipping will be lost again to sales tax. At least I'll save the part of having to ship stuff back to them all the time because I ordered something for my wife that didn't fit.

What might be real drag though, is the traffic in and around AppleJack's. That place is a zoo now, so I can't imagine what it will be like around the holidays once Cabela's is open (regardless of what they do to the roads).

"DITTO that"

You notice how one keeps the wife happy and there's reduced conflict when the catalogs arrive.
Unfortunately it took me a couple years to figure that one out . . .

That's pretty much what i have heard. Big pow wow over roads. Guess we keep on waiting.

The development is in the EA process related to the roads. Public hearings related to the road alignments should start in May. The main reason for the delay is Federal regs related to the new ramps off of WB I70 to SH58 and EB SH 58 to WB I70. Further not all the money has been "found" for these improvements. So far only 8 million fromn the Feds has been earmarked for the approx 50 million project.

The sales tax at Cabelas will be 6.8% + 1.4% PIF= total 8.2% on all transactions.

I would think Wheat Ridge and Colorado would be pushing hard for this - $500,000 in additional sales tax, 4000 potential jobs. Wheat Ridge is screwed if Cabela's moves to another location - they lose those jobs, the exposure, etc.

Hopefully everything will get ironed out. The location is prime once they figure out the new traffic plan. With Hwy 58 being there it throws a wrench into the gears as Juke mentioned in his post. They have to get the access figured out and the monies allocated.

HWY 58 is the wrench they are counting on. Without access to Cabelas from HWY 58 everything was going to have to come in on 32nd. And the local neighborhood was pizzed. An estimated 35,000 cars coming and going from Cabelas on a Saturday, who would not be angry.

The Gov is trying to get Ref C monies to help pay for some of this project. If the adequate funding does not come in for the roads, Cabelas has an out in their contract with Wheat Ridge and Coors, and they will pick up and leave.

Cabelas is really puzzled by this situation. In all their other stores they have been welcomed with open arms and the red carpet treatment. The CO store has been full of problems. They have spent a bunch of $$$ with no results so far.

I guess I should have clarified. Currently CO 58 going east you can't access WB 70 and the EB 70 can't access CO 58 unless you do the Ward rd loop around.

I'm puzzled too. I've been to the Bass Pro and the other smaller box stores and thye don't seem to bring in the same crowds as does Cabelas....just look at the Sidney Store it's bus stop central. Thwe Wheat Ridge Store would be the same except it's off I 70 and not I 80.

Yeah, I heard they were promised their own exit on 70 and now the state is fighting it - so Cabelas has threatened to pull out, but Wheat Ridge is begging them to stay - that's why they have to go up against the state (both Wheat Ridge and Cabelas).

I've been by the spot - seems like there is plenty of room for an off/on ramp. Delaying this thing a year isn't good for anyone. I bet when this thing gets the OK that Cabelas will double time it and get it up twice as fast as usual.

I guess I enjoy Cabelas as much as the next guy, but I still prefer a really good local shop. I've hear rumours that Billings might be getting a Sportsmans Warehouse. My only hope is that it will help provide some incentive for our local shops to do even better.

You guys in Denver should just be happy that you have some real high quality fly shops in the area. emthup[1].gif

I agree Paul. Granted I buy the majority of my fly fishing stuff in the local shops.....they have what I want and need and I like that once you know the owner, you can hang out shoot the breeze and have a good visit. Just keep those $40 purchases away from the Mrs. Shame On You.gif However, for those of us that have other hobbies, having a cabelas in the hip pocket can be a good deal.

I don't know what you guys are waiting for...once Cabela's landed in Kansas City the fly shop I work at has taken a hit. I don't know how big, I don't see the books, but I know it affects us. Of course, we keep the "regluars," the "die-hards," but the novices and cheapskates are going to Cabela's to buy Chinese rods and $20 lines. I have been in the Cabela's fly shop lots of times, and I constantly hear advice being given that I would generally disagree with. It's usually understaffed, most of the guys there are curmudgeons, and don't really keep up with the new stuff.

But, if you're a hunter, then Cabela's is great. That's the only real reason I go there. They do have pretty much anything I could be looking for (although their fly fishing selection pretty much sucks, the CO stores will presumably be much better).

Beware the huge crowds, don't shop on weekends or holidays.
