Floated the section of the colorado from New Castle to Silt last week. Took a buddy of mine, who is somewhat a beginner but is all about learning and loves the sport. So I basically was the guide for the day. Streamers were working. My buddy hooked up with a rainbow, didn't land him because he got wrapped around a rock and snaped the leader, but when he jumped the 3 feet out of the water, twice, went about 24" and a good 7lbs, if I was to estimate. Biggest river trout I have seen. Was able to pull off and wade a few favorite spots and landed this guy. Great time of the year on the colorado!

Always wanted to do that section. Two quick questions....any technical rowing down there and how much private vs public land does that float consist of?

Think that may be a killer fall streamer float. Nice brown by the way!

My friend and I floated the stretch yesterday from Glenwood to Dynamo. Dynamo is the truck parking section on I-70 a mile east of Newcastle. Moss was a problem, but if we could get any kind of a drift (nymphs) without moss, we were able to hook up. We too threw Streamers and did well on them aswell.

I need a better camera than my cell phone!

ssoren1, The water from Newcastle to Silt isnt technical at all. If you get a chance try to get there in the next month. The Browns have the feed bag on.

Hef, like dubbin said not technical at all. Only thing is to find the deepest water at a couple of spots as it gets a little shallow.

The browns will be getting their feed on pretty soon. Should be a blast, hopefully I can get a day in between hunting.

What is the private/public mix on that stretch? Sounds like a potentially great spot to do a little cast & blast??!?!?

The highway side is mostly public (the river follows I-70). The other side is private, but I only get out of the boat on the pastures (the ranchers don't seem to care). I do know there is one guy that has a house on the right side about half to 3/4 way down to silt that won't put up with people on his property, but his house is fairly close to the water so if you stay away from the houses when you get out you won't have an issue. The only spot that is a little technical is just above the New Castle boat ramp, there is a big ledge there that goes all the way across the river with some boulders on the right. At higher flows this is not an issue but at lower flows you have to setup correctly before starting down as the depth of the water on the ledge is shallow doesn't allow much for the oars to grab onto. I'd stay left or middle and you would have no problems.

i'll be coming back from elk hunting south of GJ on oct. 15th, and i'll drive right by this section. is it possible to wade fish and swing any of this water, or is it too big through there? i've driven by it a bunch, but i don't recall what the water's like. if i could get some feisty browns on the swing after filling my elk tag, that would make for a damn fine trip.

Great section of water! I've had some wonderful days floating this in the "winter season" Sure sounds like an awesome fish he lost. My brother landed his largest fish ever this year on a Radical Caddis in green,,,was a gorgeous bow of 25"...Just a Huge fish that was landed right before taking out at Silt......what luck huh? lol
