I know we have quite a few guys on this board that like the St Croix Legend Ultra. Well I found a used 6wt and purchased the rod. I certainly haven't used it for fishing, YET, but I must say it is a very nice action. It is similiar to the Redington DFR that it replaces. This should be the perfect rod for my nymphing and streamer needs.

Guess I should have listened to you sooner Ben!

That's good advice no matter what I'm talking about. tongue.gif

They are sweet casting rods, handle fish well with a strong butt section and cut through the wind wonderfully. My 9'9" 7wt is my go to rod on a number of larger rivers, and hauls in the pigs quickly, so I can get back after 'em. emthup[1].gif

What line did you use on this rod? What length? I'm finishing up a 9'9" 6wt Legend Ultra. Not sure what line I should try for this rod?

Ciao

Mike, I believe the line is a SA GPX. It is an OK like, but I will eventually replace it with a RIO line. I must admit the line did load very nicely and I was throwing 60-70' of line on the grass.

I guess I'm a big fan of Rio lines and would like to get all my reels spooled with that brand.

Mike,

I know you didn't ask me but having fished a bunch of Legend Ultra's, I thought I'd throw in my $0.02 anyway.

If you're thinking floating lines:

For your 9'9" #6, the SA GPX would be a fine line, as would a Rio Nymph line if most of your casts are of a longish nature.

What would really load that rod nicely would be a Rio Grand, however I have had some longevity issues with that line...seems like I get through "almost" an entire season with one and then the first 8 feet make a phenomenal sink tip.

For the ultimate in rod loading for that baby, I'd check out the SA Steelhead Taper...I think they still make it in a #6 but you'll probably have to order it as I haven't seen it in many shops out here. It's a 100' line so it's a bit longer but I love it for streamers and indy rigs with weight on larger rivers because that taper will roll cast a country mile and always picks up off the water and loads the rod quickly. I've got steelhead tapers on my 7 and 8 and they're just the ticket in the wind.

For sinking lines:
SA Streamer Express or Rio Density Compensated...both sink like a stone.

Is your new rod the 'new' IPC legend ultra or the older (2yrs or so) series? Has anyone compared the new and old rods? I have the old series 9' 6wt and am a big fan, using it as my primary deep nymph/streamer rod.

my 4wt is an IPC rod, and the 7wt is an older model, but I can't really tell a difference yet. But then again, I haven't even lawn cast the 4wt. wink.gif

As for lines, you can't go wrong with an Airflo Platinum series. B)

Ian, The "new" rod is indeed the older series. It is actually a saltwater model with the fighting butt. I'm looking forward to getting out and fishing this rod.
