The Pitzen Knot is a terminal knot, used to attach a fly to the tippet. Once learned,
the Pitzen Knot is simple to tie. The primary advantage of this knot is that it
is stronger than most other terminal knots. |

Tying the Pitzen Knot
1. Thread the tippet through the eye of the hook.
2. Bring the tag end of the tippet back and under the running end of the tippet.
3. Bring the tag end back toward the hook to form a loop and take one complete wrap
around both lines.
4. Take two additional wraps around both lines, with each successive wrap taken
closer to the hook.
5. Make an additional half wrap and bring the tag end of the tippet back through
the loop that was previously formed.
6. Moisten the tippet material and pull the knot taut. Apply final tension to the
knot by snugging the running end of the tippet. If the knot is properly tied, a
noticeable click will be felt upon completion.

Tying the Double Pitzen Knot
The Pitzen Knot is stronger than most of the knots used to tie leaders and tippets
together, such as the Blood Knot. Thus, when using the Pitzen Knot, breakoffs tend
to occur at the leader, rather than at the fly. This problem can be solved by using
a Double Pitzen Knot to tie tippets to leaders. The Double Pitzen Knot may also
be used to contstruct entire knotted leaders. |
1. Lay the tag ends of the leader and tippet used to tie the tippet to the leader
side by side. Bring the tag end of the tippet under the running end of the leader
and double the tippet tag back to form a loop.
2. Wrap the tag end of the tippet around the running ends of both the tippet and
the leader.
3. Complete one side of the Double Pitzen Knot by taking an additional two and a
half wraps with the tag end of the tippet and bringing the tag end of the tippet
back through the loop.
4. Complete the second side of the Double Pitzen Knot by repeating the process with
the tag end of the leader.
5. Snug the second side of the Double Pitzen Knot. Moisten the running line portion
of the tippet and leader and slide the two sides of the knot together.
